Tag

Freeze tag, blob tag, sharks and minnows, line tag, shadow tag, tunnel tag — Marshall picks based on the energy in the room. Great between bigger games for cooling down, or as a whole session for the under-7 crew.

Depends on the variant. Marshall calls it before the round.

Full rules

  1. 01

    Freeze tag

    One 'It' tries to tag everyone. Tagged = frozen in place. Other players can unfreeze frozen teammates by crawling under their legs. It wins when everyone's frozen.

  2. 02

    Blob tag

    One 'It' starts. When they tag someone, that player joins their team — they hold hands and chase together. The blob gets bigger and bigger. Last untagged player wins.

  3. 03

    Sharks and minnows

    Marshall is a shark in the middle. Kids are minnows on one end. On 'go,' minnows try to sprint to the other end without getting tagged. Tagged kids become sharks. Last minnow wins.

  4. 04

    Line tag

    Players have to stay on the lines painted on the floor. One 'It' tries to tag them — also on the lines. Stepping off = automatic out. Surprisingly hard.

  5. 05

    Shadow tag

    Instead of tagging the person, you have to step on their shadow. Lights set low so shadows are big and dramatic. Big kids hate it, little kids love it.

  6. 06

    Tunnel tag

    Variant of freeze tag — instead of crawling under legs, frozen players hold hands above their head to make a 'tunnel'; teammates run through to unfreeze. Adds a coordination layer the older kids love.

Pro tips

  • TIP

    If you're It, don't chase one person. Cut off angles. Be efficient.

  • TIP

    Stay near the edges of the floor — easier to dodge.

  • TIP

    Unfreeze teammates near the edges first; they can help unfreeze the middle next.
